Antique World Map c. 1675 — Seller, Novissima Totius Orbis
Description
An old world map of about 1675, with California as an island
Two hemispheres, each 27 cm across, on a sheet of 45 by 55 cm, from John Seller's Atlas maritimus. The Library of Congress record names the one thing everybody looks for first — California is drawn as an island, not as a coast — and then lists what fills the corners: scenes of the four seasons, and small astronomical charts showing the phases of the moon and the competing hypotheses of how the planets are arranged. The record dates the sheet as 1675 with a question mark, which is why the year in the title is given as approximate.

How to print
- Print at 300 dpi at the size above and do not let the shop scale the file up.
- Pick the archive whose proportions match your frame, so nothing is cropped or stretched.
- Ask for matte fine-art paper, printed in sRGB with auto-enhancement off.
- Where to print it: print shops near you and checked prices at online labs.
Source and rights
Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division, call number G3200 1675 .S4, LCCN 2017585802. The library states the sheet is free to use and reuse. The library's own copy was trimmed to the neat line on three sides long before it was scanned, so this sheet has almost no blank margin — that is the original, not our crop.
