Description

An antique celestial map from Rome, 1593

An engraving published in Rome in 1593 by Nicolaus van Aelst, with a privilege of the Senate of Rome and his dedication to Ferdinand of Bavaria. The engraver is not named. The Rijksmuseum sheet measures 497 × 380 mm.

What is on the sheet

The museum describes it as a cross-section of the heavens in pre-Copernican cosmology. Concentric bands rise from the elements through the planets, the constellations and the crystalline heaven to the choirs of angels, the saints, the Virgin Mary and the Trinity. Scenes from the Apocalypse climb from the lower right toward the Trinity at top center, and at the lower left a map of the northern Mediterranean carries an inset of John on Patmos. Decorative borders frame the whole.
